Destination Resort GM Awards

Honouring the General Managers who lead vast, self-contained destination resorts — masterplanned estates where entertainment, golf, theme parks, multiple hotels and conventions live side by side, and where the resort itself is the destination.

A Category for the Largest Stages in Hospitality

When the Resort Becomes the Destination

Some resorts are not places you visit on the way to somewhere else — they are the somewhere else. The Destination Resort GM Awards recognise the General Managers who lead these immense, self-contained estates: integrated resorts where a single property combines several hotels, signature entertainment, championship golf, theme or water parks, retail promenades, beach clubs, marinas and convention space large enough to host a small city. Guests arrive, check in, and for days at a time never have a reason to leave the gates.

Running a destination resort is a fundamentally different discipline from running a hotel. A General Manager in this world is not managing a building; they are stewarding a masterplanned guest ecosystem with its own internal economy, transport, utilities, public spaces and rhythms. They balance the needs of a honeymooning couple, a 4,000-delegate corporate conference, a multi-generational family on a week-long stay, a destination wedding party and a high-roller entertainment guest — all on the same estate, on the same day. This award exists because that scale of leadership deserves its own stage and its own peer group.

Across the World GM Awards we deliberately avoid measuring every leader against one generic benchmark. A destination resort GM is judged against others who command comparable complexity — not against the leader of a single boutique property or a city business hotel. That is what makes this recognition credible: it is earned through independent, merit-based jury evaluation against peers who genuinely understand what it takes to orchestrate a resort the size of a town.

The Leadership Challenge

Orchestrating a Guest Ecosystem at Scale

A destination resort GM presides over an operation that can employ thousands of people across dozens of disciplines that rarely sit under one roof anywhere else. Hotel operations are only the beginning. The same leader is ultimately accountable for theme-park and attraction safety, golf course agronomy, marina and watersports operations, large-scale food and beverage across many concepts, retail tenancy, live entertainment and shows, transport fleets that move guests across the estate, and convention centres staging events of national significance.

The logistics are relentless. Tens of thousands of guests may be on the property at once, each on a different stage of a multi-day journey. Demand peaks across the estate must be choreographed so that pools, parks, restaurants, shuttles and showrooms never collapse under their own popularity. Behind the scenes sit central plant, water and waste systems, security at city scale, and a supply chain feeding an operation that consumes more in a week than many businesses do in a year.

Above all, the destination resort GM must hold a single, coherent guest narrative across this sprawl — so that a family, a delegate and a couple each feel the resort was designed entirely around them. The leaders who achieve this are rare, and they are exactly who this award is built to recognise.

A Distinct Discipline

What Sets Destination Resort Leaders Apart

The skill set demanded by an integrated mega-resort goes well beyond hospitality fundamentals. These General Managers operate more like the mayor and chief executive of a small, purpose-built town than like a traditional hotelier. The most accomplished among them share a recognisable set of strengths.

Masterplanned thinking. They understand the estate as a designed ecosystem — how guests flow between hotels, parks, restaurants and entertainment, how dwell time in one zone feeds spend in another, and how to evolve the masterplan as tastes and markets shift over years and decades.

Multi-business fluency. A single P&L may contain rooms, attractions, gaming or entertainment, golf, retail, marine, conventions and dozens of dining concepts. The GM must speak the language of every one of these businesses and integrate them into one financial and strategic story.

Crowd and capacity mastery. Where a hotel manages occupancy, a destination resort manages crowds — moving, feeding, entertaining and protecting tens of thousands of people safely and seamlessly, while keeping the experience feeling personal and unhurried.

Workforce leadership at scale. Leading hundreds or thousands of staff, often living on or near the estate, demands culture-building, talent development and labour planning of an order few hospitality leaders ever face.

Destination stewardship. These leaders shape the reputation of an entire destination. When the resort is the reason guests fly to a country or region, the GM carries responsibility for a brand that reaches far beyond the property line.

Eligibility

Who Should Be Nominated

The Destination Resort GM Awards are open to senior leaders who carry ultimate operational responsibility for a large, integrated or self-contained destination resort. If a leader you know fits one or more of the profiles below, they belong in this category.

  • General Managers, Managing Directors or Resort Presidents of integrated resorts combining multiple hotels, entertainment, dining and leisure on a single estate.
  • Leaders of theme-park or water-park resorts where attractions and accommodation form one connected destination experience.
  • General Managers of golf and entertainment resorts with multiple courses, hotels and large-scale event programming.
  • Heads of multi-hotel resort villages operating several branded properties under one masterplan and one leadership structure.
  • Leaders of large convention and conference resorts hosting events at city scale alongside full leisure facilities.
  • General Managers running resorts with their own internal transport, retail districts, beach clubs, marinas or wellness villages — true guests-never-leave ecosystems.
  • Senior leaders who have driven the development, repositioning or turnaround of a destination resort against demanding commercial and operational targets.
