Resort General Manager Awards

Celebrating the General Managers who lead the world's great resorts — orchestrating sprawling grounds, recreation programmes, multiple dining venues and unforgettable multi-day guest journeys across every season.

A Recognition Built for Resort Leadership

Leadership at the Scale of a Destination

Running a resort is not the same as running a hotel. A resort is a self-contained world — often hundreds of acres of grounds, dozens of guest touchpoints, a portfolio of restaurants and bars, a calendar of activities, and guests who stay not for a night but for a week. The Resort General Manager Awards exist to honour the rare leaders who hold all of this together and make it feel effortless.

Where a city hotel General Manager manages turnover and transient business travel, a resort General Manager manages an experience that unfolds over days. Families arrive expecting their children to be entertained from breakfast to bedtime. Couples arrive seeking quiet coves and candlelit dinners. Adventure travellers want dive boats, hiking trails and sunrise excursions. A single resort must satisfy them all, simultaneously, on the same property — and the General Manager is the one person accountable for every part of that promise.

These awards recognise that breadth of command. From beachfront and island retreats to mountain lodges, golf and ski resorts, lakeside escapes and integrated leisure destinations, we celebrate the resort leaders who deliver financial strength, operational precision and the kind of guest experience that turns first-time visitors into returning families for a generation. What Sets Resort Leadership Apart

Many Businesses Under One Roof — and One Leader

A resort is really a cluster of businesses operating in concert. The General Manager is, in effect, running a small village: a lodging operation, several independent restaurants, a spa, a kids' club, a watersports centre or ski school, a retail arcade, an events and weddings operation, extensive grounds and a facilities estate that never sleeps.

Consider the difference in scope. A city hotel GM may oversee one restaurant and a bar. A resort GM might run a beachfront grill, a fine-dining signature venue, a poolside café, a sunset bar, in-villa dining and three banquet spaces — each with its own concept, kitchen and team. Where the city property fills with Monday-to-Thursday corporate guests, the resort sees occupancy swing from full at peak season to half-empty in the shoulder months, demanding sophisticated revenue, staffing and cost discipline.

Then there is the land itself. Manicured gardens, pools, beaches or pistes, nature trails, irrigation, marine equipment and back-of-house infrastructure spread across vast distances all fall under the resort GM's care. Leading at this scale demands a leader who is equal parts hotelier, entrepreneur, host and operations engineer.

The Resort Discipline

Designing the Guest Journey, Not Just the Stay

The defining skill of an outstanding resort General Manager is leisure experience design — choreographing how a guest moves through days on the property so that every hour offers something, yet nothing ever feels forced. The award recognises leaders who think in journeys rather than transactions.

That journey begins long before arrival, with anticipatory communication and pre-booked experiences, and continues through a warm grounds welcome, an activity calendar that balances energy and rest, dining that surprises across the week, and a farewell that leaves guests already planning their return. A city hotel optimises check-in to check-out; a resort optimises Sunday to Saturday. The leaders we honour are masters of pace, atmosphere and emotional rhythm.

Activities and recreation sit at the heart of this. Whether it is a children's adventure club, a tennis academy, guided reef snorkelling, a wellness and yoga programme, a championship golf course or an après-ski lounge, the resort GM is responsible for a living programme of things to do — one that must be safe, well-staffed, weather-resilient and consistently excellent. This is leadership most hotel managers never have to attempt.

The Operational Reality

Mastering Seasons, Scale and the Grounds

Resort leadership is defined by challenges a city property rarely faces. These awards reward the leaders who turn them into a competitive edge.

🌦️

Seasonal Demand

Managing peak-to-shoulder occupancy swings, dynamic pricing across high and low seasons, seasonal hiring waves and the financial discipline to stay profitable year-round.

🌿

Grounds & Facilities

Stewarding sprawling estates — gardens, beaches, pools, pistes, marinas and trails — alongside an engineering and sustainability operation that protects the natural setting.

🍽️

Multiple F&B Outlets

Orchestrating a portfolio of restaurants, bars, cafés and banquet venues, each with distinct concepts, so guests can dine somewhere new every night of a long stay.

🏄

Activities & Recreation

Running safe, vibrant programmes — kids' clubs, watersports, golf, ski, wellness and excursions — that fill a guest's day and keep families returning year after year.

🧭

Large Guest Journeys

Designing multi-day experiences for varied guests — families, couples and adventurers — sharing one property at once, each leaving with their own perfect stay.

👥

Workforce at Scale

Leading, housing and developing large, often remote teams — frequently the biggest employer for miles — while sustaining service culture across every outlet and season.

Eligibility

Who Should Be Nominated

The Resort General Manager Awards are open to senior leaders who carry overall accountability for a full-service resort. If a leader's role spans far beyond rooms and into recreation, dining, grounds and the whole leisure experience, this is their category. Strong candidates include:

  • General Managers and Resort Managers leading beach, island, lakeside, mountain, golf or ski resorts.
  • Managing Directors of integrated leisure destinations and large multi-outlet resort complexes.
  • Leaders who have transformed a resort's commercial performance across full and shoulder seasons.
  • GMs who have launched standout recreation, activity or kids' programmes that drive repeat family stays.
  • Resort leaders who have elevated a multi-restaurant F&B portfolio into a destination dining draw.
  • Leaders who have invested in their teams — training, housing and developing large, often remote workforces.
  • GMs who have championed sustainability and stewardship of the grounds, beaches or natural environment.
  • Leaders who have repositioned a resort's brand and lifted its standing in a competitive leisure market.

How It Works

Independent Assessment, Tailored to Resort Leadership

Every nomination is reviewed through an independent, merit-based jury evaluation — never public voting. Resort leaders are judged against peers who face comparable challenges, so a resort General Manager is measured against fellow resort leaders rather than city hotel managers. Our jury weighs each nomination across ten criteria: Leadership Excellence, Financial Performance, Team Development, Customer Satisfaction, Innovation, Operational Excellence, Guest Experience, Brand Growth, Market Position and Industry Contribution.

Winners are celebrated at the World GM Awards gala at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina on 14 November 2026 — a Black Tie evening uniting the finest leaders in global hospitality.
